Richard Smith

Chair | UK Health Alliance on Climate Change

Richard Smith is chairs of the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change, the Point of Care Foundation (which promotes compassionate, dignified care), and Patients Know Best (a company that brings all medical and social care records together in one place under the control of patients), and a cochair of

the Lancet Commission on the Value of Death.

From 2012 until 2018 he was chair of the board of trustees of icddr,b (formerly the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh) and from 2007 to 2015 he was the director of the UnitedHealth Chronic Disease Initiative, a programme with the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute that created 11 centres in low and middle income countries that conduct research and build capacity to counter non-communicable disease.

From 1979 to 2004 he worked at the BMJ and was the editor of the journal and chief executive of the BMJ Publishing Group from 1991 until he left. A member of the board of the Public Library of Science from 2004 to 2011, he continues to blog for the BMJ and to publish regularly.

He is an adjunct professor at Imperial College Institute of Global Health Innovation. Having qualified in medicine in Edinburgh, Smith worked in hospitals in Scotland and New Zealand before joining the BMJ. He also worked for six years as a television doctor with the BBC and TV-AM and has a degree in management science from the Stanford Business School. He was awarded a CBE in 2000.

Terry Kemple

RCGP Representative for Sustainability, Climate Change and Green issues

Terry Kemple is a retired GP in Bristol. He has had roles in teaching, training, quality improvement, management and research.

He is a member of the WONCA Working Party on the Environment, has been the lead for the RCGP’s Green Impact for Health Toolkit since 2014, and an executive member/trustee of the UK Health Alliance on Climate Change since 2017.

He was the RCGP national representative for Sustainability, Climate Change and Green Issues until 2023, and is a Past President of the Royal College of General Practitioners.

Florence Wedmore

Chief Sustainability Officer's Clinical Fellow, NHS

Florence Wedmore is a medical doctor, and has worked as a medical registrar in London. She is currently on the NHS Chief Sustainability Officer’s Clinical fellowship scheme, and based at the BMJ as part of the editorial team.

Dr. Maria Van-Hove

Chief Sustainable Officer's Clinical Fellow, Greener NHS

Dr. Maria van Hove is a public health registrar and currently Chief Sustainability Officer’s Clinical Fellow at Greener NHS and Getting it Right First Time (GIRFT) at NHS England. She is also co-chair of the Faculty of Public Health’s Sustainable Development SIG.
